Obamacare Wars: Capretta vs Tanden – a New Round of Lies?
As I write this article on Dec 1, 2013, the Obamacare website healthcare.gov is supposedly up & running. It’s not clear yet whether it is or not, or what “running” actually means. But already, Obamacare’s architects and defenders are spinning the news about the whole ongoing Obamacare debacle and offering yet another round of deceptive assurances and false promises.
In particular, see the video below in which Obamacare “writer” and apologist Neera Tanden debates James Capretta on the outlook for Obamacare. Tanden is president of the Center for American Progress, a progressive/neo-Marxist group that backs ever-larger, more intrusive, and more costly central government planning and control over virtually all aspects of our lives. Obamacare is their masterpiece, and they played a major role in its creation and passage into law. Capretta is with the Ethics and Public Policy Center, a conservative think tank that favors limited government, free markets, and fiscal responsibility.
At about the 10:10 mark on the timeline, in a reprise of Obama’s if-you-like-it-you-can-keep-it false promise, Tanden says the “vast majority” people who get their health insurance through their employer will keep it. How can she say that with a straight face? She does, albeit haltingly. What will she say when that turns out to be another big fat Obama-esque lie? Perhaps she’ll blame the insurance companies? Republicans? Doctors?
People like Tanden will blame anyone and anything but the Obamacare concept itself, which is rotten to the core with price controls, rationing boards, unresponsive bloated bureaucracies, market distortions, politically appointed “managers”, no-bid insider contracts, delayed care, denied care, errors, confusion, lawsuits, and angry finger-pointing.
I suppose there are some things that corrupt Chicag0-ward-style fascistic governance can accomplish, but quality healthcare for 330 million people is surely not one of them. This is more than a bridge too far.
So stay tuned … this train wreck is still in its early stages.
As a postscript, James Capretta is becoming a sane, conservative “go-to” guy in the debate over Obamacare and the alternatives. He can be calm and unflappable while his opponents are flailing about, trying desperately to defend the indefensible. One of their prime “defenses” is to claim that the other side has not offered any alternatives. That’s a either a bald-faced lie or dispositive proof of their stupefying ignorance — Capretta is one of many who have proposed far more rational and far-less disruptive healthcare strategies. Still more have appeared at RSC, Heritage, and NCPA.
After the disaster that is Obamacare, perhaps even the go-along-to-get-along, reach-across-the-aisle Republicans will take health care seriously enough to do something positive about it instead of simply acquiescing to Democrats’ statist rule-by-bureaucracy plans.
