Qanta Ahmed article in FOX News: Self-delusion or masterful taqiyya?
This jarring article was written by a Muslim and published on Fox News. What’s so jarring about it?
Well, the first shocker is that it was published on Fox News, the closest thing to a mainstream news source that hasn’t completely caved to the Islamist agenda. Maybe that 7% share owned by billionaire oil sheikh Al-Waleed bin Talal has something to do with this unsettling new tone (click here. By the way, there are 15 billionaires in Saudi Arabia alone – click here – a huge number given that the population of Saudi Arabia is only 27 million).
The second shocker is how masterful a work of taqiyya this article is. If I didn’t know better, having read the Koran, the hadiths, a couple biographies of Muhammad, and numerous commentaries, it would have fooled me.
How does this writer work her taqiyya magic? Through a crafty redefinition of terms – a favorite tactic that I’ve seen Islamists use over and over:
- The first example of a redefined term is in the headline itself, where the author claims that the terrorist attack we saw in Kenya is not jihad, but “new jihad.” Presumably this means that “real” jihad is what CAIR says it is in its ad campaign (click here): goal-setting. For example, “My jihad is to build bridges through friendship.”
- The “new jihad” is not a real jihad because the Muslims who committed it are “hypocrites.” This is where Ahmed’s redefinitions get really clever. According to her, hypocrites claim to be Muslims but are filled with a “false but very potent religious fervor,” characterized by “political Islamism,” which “is more dangerous than even Nazi supremicism.” But this is not the Quran’s definition of a hypocrite at all, as can be seen in Sura 33, verses 9-20:
O you who believe! Remember Allah’s Favour to you, when there came against you hosts, and We sent against them a wind and forces that you saw not [i.e. troops of angels during the battle of Al-Ahzab (the Confederates)]. And Allah is Ever All-Seer of what you do. When they came upon you from above you and from below you, and when the eyes grew wild and the hearts reached to the throats, and you were harbouring doubts about Allah. There, the believers were tried and shaken with a mighty shaking. And when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is a disease (of doubts) said: “Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusions!” And when a party of them said: “O people of Yathrib (Al-Madinah)! There is no stand (possible) for you (against the enemy attack!) Therefore go back!” And a band of them ask for permission of the Prophet saying: “Truly, our homes lie open (to the enemy).” And they lay not open. They but wished to flee. And if the enemy had entered from all sides (of the city), and they had been exhorted to Al-Fitnah (i.e. to renegade from Islam to polytheism) they would surely have committed it and would have hesitated thereupon but little. And indeed they had already made a covenant with Allah not to turn their backs, and a covenant with Allah must be answered for.
Say (O Muhammad to these hypocrites who ask your permission to run away from you): “Flight will not avail you if you flee from death or killing, and then you will enjoy no more than a little while!”
Say: “Who is he who can protect you from Allah if He intends to harm you, or intends mercy on you?”
And they will not find, besides Allah, for themselves any Wali (protector, supporter, etc.) or any helper. Allah already knows those among you who keep back (men) from fighting in Allah’s Cause, and those who say to their brethren “Come here towards us,” while they (themselves) come not to the battle except a little. Being miserly towards you (as regards help and aid in Allah’s Cause). Then when fear comes, you will see them looking to you, their eyes revolving like (those of) one over whom hovers death, but when the fear departs, they will smite you with sharp tongues, miserly towards (spending anything in any) good (and only covetous of booty and wealth). Such have not believed. Therefore Allah makes their deeds fruitless, and that is ever easy for Allah. They think that Al-Ahzab (the Confederates) have not yet withdrawn, and if Al-Ahzab (the Confederates) should come (again), they would wish they were in the deserts (wandering) among the edouins, seeking news about you (from a far place); and if they (happen) to be among you, they would not fight but little.
In other words, the Quran’s definition of a hypocrite is someone who claims to follow Muhammad but is afraid to join him in battle to fight in the name of Islam – the very OPPOSITE of what Ahmed claims a hypocrite is.
Therefore, by redefining “hypocrite” to mean “bloodthirsty murderer” rather than a Muslim who is afraid to fight in the name of Allah, she manages to defend Islam by completely disowning the atrocities committed by true-blue jihadists.
Why would she do this? Because there are lots of Westerners who are starting to wake up to the true nature of Islam, but don’t want to believe what they see because it would mean that they’ve got to get out of their comfortable routines and defend themselves from attack. Her message is that not all Muslims are like these jihadists, and that the jihadists are outliers who can be ignored because most Muslims are peaceful like her. Her goal is to lull Westerners back into a passive state while “peaceful” Muslims – like the Muslim Brotherhood – battle with “hypocrite” Muslims – like al Qaeda – for the soul of Islam.
And, of course, we Westerners should supply the “peaceful Muslims” with arms and money to help them fight the “hypocrites.” Just like the Obama Administration did with Morsi in Egypt, and what he’s trying to do in Syria with the Muslim Brotherhood’s rebel faction.
Ahmed is so effective in her deception that it’s possible that she’s even deceiving herself. I’m convinced that there are many genuinely peaceful Muslims who are so eager to join modern society that they will do all sorts of impossible mental acrobatics in order to claim that Islam can be reconciled with Western modernity. But the bottom line is that she’s just making stuff up, and burying her lie so deeply within a false definition that most Westerners will fall for it out of their perfectly understandable ignorance.
The bottom line is that unless a Westerner is fully armed with deep knowledge of the Quran and hadiths, sooner or later a Muslim will be able to pull the wool over their eyes by inserting false definitions and narratives that the Westerner will accept without even realizing it.
Therefore, always be careful of the “facts” that Muslims tell you. Be skeptical. Double check their information for yourself. And, most importantly, read the Quran, the hadiths, and biographies of Muhammad for yourself so that you can immediately recognize when you’re being lied to.

September’s attack on the Westgate shopping center in Nairobi announced loud and clear that virulent Islamism is now at a mall near you. Counterterrorism experts’ worst fears came true when the ultimate symbol of secular western consumption — a glossy, multicultural, family-centered shopping center — became the latest target for Islamist jihadism. Welcome to the new jihad.
Smartphone videos captured an interrogation of victims not seen since Hitler’s Third Reich as Islamists halted shoppers demanding proof of authenticity as Muslims. Failure meant execution. No exceptions.
Our complacency, our failure to recognize that the Islamist threat is everywhere is beyond dangerous. The new jihad is more violent, more intrusive and more immediate than anything we’ve witnessed in the post 9/11 era. Today’s battlefields are not in Mosul or Malakand, Helmand or the Hindukush but instead at the mall on Main Street near you.
With their actions, Westgate jihadists violated the most profound tenets of Islam. As an observant Muslim woman, let me clarify: no act is singularly more unIslamic than the destruction of human life. No assault is more offensive to Islam (which enshrines free will) than compulsory belief. No law of war in Islam is more violated than the targeting of unarmed men, women, and children.
Islamists are precisely those about whom the Koran warned Muslims, the ‘Munafiqun’ (“the hypocrites).” No enemy imperils Muslims more than the Munafiqun and only we as Muslims can expose them as such. They claim to represent us as they destroy us.
We face a fearsome enemy. Political Islamism is . . . keep reading
