Bill Gates Named New Vice Mayor of Phoenix
On Wednesday, January 30th, Phoenix City Councilman Bill Gates was elected as vice mayor by his fellow city council members.
“I look forward to this expanded role and the opportunity to learn more about the other council districts,” said Gates. “My focus this year will continue to be innovations and efficiencies – including smart technology – that will help us realize our goal of saving tax payers $100 million by 2015. While public safety will always be our number one priority, other areas of focus will be the revitalization of vacant lots and retail spaces, economic development and maintaining and improving the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.”
Recently elected AZGOP Chairman Robert Graham offered congratulatory remarks to the new vice mayor last week:
“Vice Mayor Bill Gates is a strong fiscal conservative and his leadership on the Phoenix City Council has served his constituents well. We’re proud to count Vice Mayor Bill Gates among the many locally-elected members of the Republican Party who value fiscal restraint and are committed to protecting taxpayers.”
Gates, who represents District 3, will serve as Vice Mayor until the end of 2013. Phoenix City Council races are non-partisan, but Gates is a lifelong Republican and is seen amongst the most conservative voting block of the Phoenix City Council along with Councilmembers Jim Waring and Sal DiCiccio. The previous Vice Mayor was Democrat Michael Johnson.
