Representative Seel Vows To Prevent Medical Billing Fraud In Arizona
From Representative Carl Seel (R-Dist. 6):
STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX (October 9, 2012) – Federal authorities recently charged 91 health care professionals with multiple counts of criminal fraud for having fraudulently billed Medicare for over $430 million.
The amounts stem from an investigation that found that the government was being billed for multiple unnecessary services and uncovered prescription costs. The investigation spanned multiple states and cities where physicians and other medical professionals received kickbacks and incentives in exchange for fraudulent billings.
Although the federal investigation did not extend to any Arizona based practitioners or providers, Representative Carl Seel (R-Dist. 6) was incensed by the findings. Representative Seel stated, “Arizona’s Medicaid programs account for over $8 billion in FY ‘13 annual funding. Once the state’s 51st Legislature convenes, I fully expect to work with the joint Legislative Audit Committee to ensure that the recently revealed abuses of the Medicare system will not be duplicated with Arizona’s Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS).”
