A Prairie Fire of Debt

Listen to the words of Thomas Jefferson:

“It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes.” (source)

“the principle of spending money to be paid by posterity, under the name of funding, is but swindling futurity on a large scale.” (source)

One of the most under-discussed aspects of our massive and growing debts, at the local, state, and national level, is the terrible impact these debts will have on future generations. It is occasionally mentioned, but it is not given the focus it deserves considering that it is a moral crime of the first order. As individuals, most of us want our children to do BETTER than we did. We wouldn’t dream of saddling our children with obligations that diminish their future prospects.  And yet, that is exactly what we are doing as a nation.

Barack Obama has increased our debt more than any other president, and by an amount greater than all the debt we accumulated for almost our entire history before he took office. That is a moral crime. It has consequences for us, and even greater consequences for our children and their children.

There is a prairie fire of debt sweeping across our nation. Every day that we fail to act, it gets closer to the homes and the children we love. We need a president who will lead us out of this debt and spending inferno.
