Florida Democrats fly American flag with Obama’s face in place of the stars

First, the story:

An American flag with President Obama’s image in place of the stars flew over a Florida county’s Democrat headquarters long enough to enrage local veterans who called the altered banner “a disgrace.”

Lake County Democratic Party officials took down the flag, which flew just below a standard Old Glory on the flagpole outside headquarters in Tavares following complaints by local veterans. But merely taking it down wasn’t enough for several local veterans, who said they fought for the flag Betsy Ross made famous, not one with a politician on it.

Apparently, the flag has been flying for months.

The flag, which had been flying for several months without complaint and is available online for $12.95, was later removed by Hurlbert.

Bradford said Hurlbert apologized for the incident, but did not offer any promises that it wouldn’t fly again.

“What really upsets me is that the flag had apparently been flying for months and no one had done anything about it,” Bradford said. “I’ve got no hard feelings toward [Hurlbert], but people will be driving by there to make sure it doesn’t go up again.”

Hurlbert said Tuesday’s incident was the first time anyone had complained about the flag, which she received as a gift two months ago.

We can look at this from a number of angles.

First, it is a violation of flag rules to have such a flag in the first place. To then fly it over the headquarters of a political party is bizarre (until you realize which party it was, whereupon it is not as much of a surprise).

Second, imagine if a Republican headquarters had flown a flag like this with George Bush’s face instead of the starts in the blue field. Imagine the media’s reaction. Imagine the Democratic Party apparatchiks marching out to talk about Bush’s scary cult of personality and incipient fascism.

But of course, you cannot imagine this, because it would not happen.

A) It is unlikely that such a Bush version of such a flag has ever been produced. Lots of merchandise has been produced with the exalted visage of leader Obama. Some is made for all presidents, of course, but there has very likely never been such a proliferation as we see today. Nor have we ever had a president create his own presidential seal. The Obama phenomenon is new.

B) If such a flag did exist, officials at Republican Party headquarters would not fly it. Either they would refuse out of respect for flag rules, or they would think it crass.

But the notion that Democrats would do this is actually not a stretch at all. The left has a long history of leader-worship and easily goes in for a good cult of personality.

Third, there’s the singularly amusing fact that the flag was made in China. Oops.

And finally, just because . . .

(Excellent band from the days of my youth.)
