Kirk Adams Promises Not to Take Congressional Pension
If there is one thing conservative voters are tired of, it is career politicians. Often a career in politics is rewarded with high salaries and extravagant pensions, a benefit that many private sectors Americans do not enjoy. While Speaker of the House in Arizona, Kirk Adams fought for pension reform and spearheaded the most conservative agenda in decades. Adams brought real reforms that brought about greater fiscal responsibility in the areas of big government that are typically off limits to change.
Adams, now running for Congress in Arizona’s 6th District to replace Jeff Flake, has promised to not take a pension for his service. As Speaker of the Arizona House, Adams also did not participate in the state pension scheme.
Explaining his motivation for refusing his pensions, Adams said, “People are tired of career politicians enriching themselves through elected office. In meetings with voters across the East Valley, I hear again and again that they are tired of Washington elites living by one set of rules and legislating a different set of rules for the people.
Voters want to be represented by public servants, not career politicians or lobbyists who benefit from the system. I put my money where my mouth is. I did not take a pension for my service here in Arizona and I will not take a pension if I am elected to Congress.”
This is much more than just campaign speak, it is an essential characteristic of a conservative politician. The incentive to stay in Congress, to increase pay and benefits are apart of the primary reasons why spending is out of control in Washington.
I think it helps that Adams first started off as an entrepreneur and businessman before entering the realm of politics. These experiences often give one greater perspective on real world economics, allowing individuals to craft effective policy. If there is one “factor” missing in Congress and is a primary principle of conservatism, it is business acumen.
Adams is enjoying strong fundraising and recently has secured the endorsement of former Arizona Senate President and Speaker Stan Turley. Adams also has a fundraiser on January 30th, hosting Former Vice President Dan Quayle and his son Congressman Ben Quayle. There will be a rally and then a fundraiser across the street at Gilbert favorite, Joe’s Real BBQ.
Kirk Adams is a real conservative but it is still important to recognize character driven actions when they present themselves. It takes courage to stand up to big government interests.
